Sigur Ros put on an epic performance in a sold-out olympia while on tour here playing their new songs off Takk, the latest album. The gig opened with a brilliant lights show, a white sheet was drapped in front of the stage from behind which you could see the silohettes of the band appear and disappear. They slowly kicked it off with the mellancholic start of Takk, a build up was mounting. As the lead singer came out from backstage, the crowd burst into applause and watched in awe as the shadow of his tall elongated body towered over his guitar and ‘Glosoli’ began. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as the song hit its climax, this was only the beginning of what was to be an amazing gig. If you thought Takk was good when you first heard it on cd, imagine how spectacular it is live! They followed up glosoli with ‘Hoppipolla’ and ‘Se lest’, they played some songs from earlier albums which i`m not going even attempt to spell. One of my grestest memories of the night was when they played Saeglopur (track6 off Takk), the performance was so intense it was like an out of body experience for the legions of fans. But thats what Sigur Ros are all about build-ups that are just out of this world and complicated melodies using instruments that most contemporary artists could only dream about. As the gig drew to an end,the whole audience was so captivated and full of a deep feeling of satisfaction, proud to feel like they were part of or close to a moment of greatness. ‘Heysatan’ with its slow but warm melody was a befitting end to Sigur Ros`s performance in Dublin (which without my wonderful friend Ailbhe i wouldnt have the chance to go to).
