Trinity FM – Yes that’s right we have a radio station on campus!
Trinity Fm is the radio station of Trinity college, run exclusively by students for students. The station was created in 1998 as a joint venture between a few enthusiasts and the Ents officer from the student Union as medium to cover RAG week and other big student events. It started out on rented equipment with no studio in sight broadcasting from the Ents office in House 6.
In 2000 D.U. Radio Society was born, a significant grant from the Central Societies Committee saw a brand new studio being kitted out at the top of House 6 and a permanent aerial being mounted on the side on a chimney atop house 6. Since then the station has gone from to strength broadcasting on 97.3FM and streaming online at www.trinityfm.com, particularly useful to listen to when you’re checking your emails in the computer labs or avoiding writing a dissertation in the library!!
Trinity FM broadcasts on a temporary license granted by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland for a total of 6 weeks per year which are spread out throughout the academic terms.
Trinity FM prides itself on playing exactly what students want to hear, as we’re student too I think we’ve got a pretty good insight. In terms of music the TFM schedule features all the new music you want to hear from the likes of Kasabian, the Killers, Sufjan Stevens, Peter Bjorn & John, the Shins, the Kooks, David Kitt to stuff like Fourtet, Broken Social Scene and Sigur Ros. We also throw in all the classics too for good measure.
There are several shows to watch out for: Fritz W. Schnitzel’s Teutonian Top Hits, a
special on contemporary electronic and indie music from Germany. Big Sofa with Andrew Booth, just released from a mental asylum Andrew plays the craziest and most extreme music I’ve ever heard! Blue Monday, takes you on a trip through the mêlée that is modern music, playing hottest of the hot in new music to pick you up from your Monday blues. Plastic Soul with Nick Johnson effortlessly blends together indie/underground, old rock, jazz, hip-hop, blues, and classical to give an all round late night chilled out show.
Our next broadcast will bring about the explosion of Trinity FM’s new mystery flagship show onto the airwaves, it will feature exclusive interviews with the finest artists in the music industry as well album and gig reviews letting you know what’s hot and what’s not. Listen in on Tuesday from 7-10pm when Messiah J and the Expert will make a guest appearance on the show for a chat and to play some of their unique sounds live in the TFM studio.
Trinity FM has diverse schedule with a variety of interest shows : The Film show 1-2pm, An Chlár Gaeilge 4-5pm,Current Affairs 5.00 – 6.30pm to name but a few. We are next on air the 20th – 25th of November, so if you’re sick of listening to commercial radio stations tune in to Trinity FM 97.3 to hear good music presented with an edge that can only be given by real students.
