| EGM this Tuesday!
Our Emergency General Meeting will be taking place this Tuesday the 6th October in Room 4050A of the arts block! Don’t know where that is? Not to worry! Look out for one of our friendly committee members in the TFM hoodie and they’ll escort you up! The meeting is the perfect chance to find out what Trinity FM is all about, meet the new committee and find out our plans for the station for the year ahead! It gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you have and to find out how you can get more involved. It is also a chance for people to sign up for editorship positions – for music, sports, current affairs, news, Irish and film. The editors are like semi-committee positions, they are expected to liaise with station management in the planning and preparation for a broadcast week. This involves preparing and producing shows, advising presenters on content, and making sure that the shows we produce are of a high standard. Editors are also more than welcome to propose any new format of show, or any new programming ideas which they may have. In addition, this year, editors will be heavily involved in the screening, preparation and development of submissions for the Student Media Awards, which take place early next year. All of these editorial positions will be filled by interview later on in the week – interested candidates can sign up at the EGM on Tuesday, or by dropping us an e-mail before then. (If this sounds daunting, its really not, and is the best way to become involved in the running of Trinity FM). Another successful year has come to an end for Trinity FM. The last event in the academic year for Trinity FM is on at 8pm this Friday 24th of April in the Eliz rooms in House 6 (1st floor, on the right as you walk up the stairs).The elections for next year’s committee will take place, which is a lot more fun than it sounds. If you have always dreamed about becoming much more involved with Trinity FM and want to be on the committee for next year then you should reply to the e-mail sent out about the AGM. It would be great to see everyone that has appeared on a show or been involved in some way over the past year to be there. Welcome to the Website of the Year
Trinityfm.com recently won website of the year at the csc society of the year awards along with cumann.ie. The sites many excellent features such as its webcam, individual show profiles, and podcasts from different shows contributed to winning the award. You can check out the latest podcasts from Kill Krinkle Club and The Ambience Affair from our Reverb show in the Podcast section now! Also TFM are hosting a Gran Casino gig in Whelans on Monday night, 13th of April. Following the release last June of their ‘Sun Music’ EP, Gran Casino were described by Phantom’s Sinead Ni Mhorda as ‘one of Dublin’s hidden gems’. Recent successes include victory in the UCD Battle of the Bands and a much-praised support slot with US alt. rockers Tilly and the Wall. Doors are at 8pm and its €7 in. (Late Bar too!) |

Tfm’s Daft Punk night is on next Wednesday the 29th of October in club XXI on D’Olier St. You can buy tickets for 5 quid from the stands set up in the Hamilton and Arts Block. Fancy dress is optional. Its going to be a great night, you’d be mad to miss it.

There will be a crash course in production in the Radio Station on Friday during lunch time. You’ll be shown how to use every piece of equipment in the studio that you could imagine or just the basics if thats all you want. Don’t worry about missing the second most important meal of the day because we’ll be supplying tasty pizza for all those who attend. It’s on from 1-2pm this Friday the 24th.
Also Welcome to our newest member of the committee, Linda. She is taking over from Andrew who will be dearly missed.
Trinity FM EGM on Next Wednesday, October 15th, in the Arts Block room 3074 at 7 pm for introductions and the likes. We will be looking for editors for current affairs, music, irish, film and sports. Also the position of Treasurer on the committee will be nominated and elected. If you have any friends who want to sign up or you yourself missed out on signing during freshers week then you’re very welcome to come along, hopefully there will be a bit of social banter afterwards, hope to see you then!
(Room 3074 is two floors up in the Arts block, its a bit of a maze up there so just look for the signs…)

Unsurprisingly for an educational institution that dates back to the late sixteenth century, Trinity College is home to its fair share of myths and rumours. Nobody is quite sure if passing under the campanile will result in ultimate failure in the end of year exams, yet very few are confident enough to put the theory to the test. Likewise, for the past couple of years, there have been vicious rumours circulating, suggesting that there is in fact a student radio station operating out of a secret location in the college grounds. Up until last year, nobody really seemed to know how legal this venture was, or who was involved in its shady dealings, or even how to tune in to its fabled ‘broadcasts’. It seemed that, despite the cunning machinations of its dedicated supporters, this ‘radio station’ was doomed to remain the black sheep of the TCD student media family.
However, at the start of the 2006/2007 academic year, a radical overhaul of the society’s management and organization was put in place; suddenly, the name ‘Trinity FM’ was being murmured ever louder and with increasing frequency. Fast forward to May 2007, and the CSC’s annual end of year awards, at which the society was presented with the dual honours of Best Medium Society and Best Individual Contribution (for its chairperson, Brendan McGuirk). Now, with the society’s profile on the up and up, Trinity FM appears to have been written out of folklore and into the day-to-day life of TCD students.
The story of the journey is as remarkable as the society’s unprecedented success of last year. Trinity’s student radio station was originally created in 1998 as a joint venture between a few enthusiasts and the SU Ents Officer. Initially intended as medium to cover RAG week and other big student events, the station was broadcast from the Ents office in House 6 with the aid of some rented equipment. However, following the success of this venture, a significant grant from the Central Societies Committee in 2000 led to the birth of the D.U. Radio Society. These much needed funds allowed for the creation of a brand new studio at the top of House 6, fitted with high-tech broadcast equipment, and the installation of a permanent aerial on the side on one of Trinity’s beloved chimneys. Since then, the station has operated on a temporary broadcasting licence granted by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, allowing it to broadcast on 97.3 FM and online at www.trinityfm.com for six weeks in the year.
As with any radio station, a large portion of Trinity FM’s programming is dedicated to music. However, as a station run completely by students, Trinity FM finds itself in the enviable position of being completely free to play the music that its DJs want to play and that its listeners want to hear. So whether you come in search of some Scandinavian folk-pop, or a little bit of Balkan trance, or even Kanye’s latest hit, you can be assured that you will find it on Trinity FM. In addition, last year saw a massive increase in the number of live guests who graced us with their presence in the Trinity FM studios. Somehow, the station managed to pack the likes of David Kitt, Republic of Loose, Director, The Immediate, The Blizzards and Messiah J & The Expert all into the short space of six broadcast weeks. With many of the bands performing rare acoustic interpretations of their hits, Trinity FM felt it was only fair to make these sessions available for those who can’t help but have a second listen. However, Trinity FM is far from just a music jukebox, and is also committed to bringing cutting-edge current affairs programmes, dedicated Irish language shows, a film magazine, and news and sports bulletins to its student listenership. With a regular prime-time slot from 5pm – 6.30pm every day of the week, the Trinity FM current affairs team is not afraid to shy away from the pressing issues of modern society. However, it was an issue closer to home that brought the current affairs team their success last year, as David Traynor’s profile of the candidates for the TCDSU presidency was nominated for a coveted Student Media award. With the run-up to US electoral primaries on the cards in 2007/2008, as well as a renewed focus on recurring issues such as immigration and abortion, the Trinity FM current affairs slot really is an excellent opportunity for the TCD student body to have their say. The team are regularly on-campus in search of student input for studio debates and discussions- you have been warned!
With dedicated programming hours in every area from film to sport to music to current affairs, Trinity FM is guaranteed to hold something for everybody, a factor which has played an important role in the station’s success thus far. This year, TFM will be picking up where it left off last year, with its sights set on bigger and better things. 2008/2009 looks set to be the year of big-name guests from the music industry, harder-hitting documentaries, even more CD and concert giveaways and who knows, maybe even that elusive Smedia!
